Questions I want to ask / things I want to explore

  • Do people acknowledge the link between food and dietary problems?
  • Why has bread become a staple in our diet - how and why was it introduced? How was advertising influenced this? Is it partly due to the creation of supermarkets in the 1970s which catered for more people with more choice?
  • Ethics -  is there much awareness or resistance to it? Is it common  knowledge that this is an issue in society like it is with sugar (sugar tax etc) - sugar is seen as the enemy, but why is bread not perceived this way? Is there a big monopoly controlling the market - i.e. Kingsmill/Weetabix etc. Are they unwilling to change their ways? Why is their such a stigma attached to gluten-free people - interview people who aren't intolerant to see what their views are.
  • Diets and lifestyle choices differ around the globe - do these link to dietary problems? Is this a Western problem? Look at countries with diets without a massive amount of carbs and gluten - what are their lives like? What is their relationship with it like? Why do they not eat it - look into social issues. Speak to people who have travelled to these sorts of places and explain their experiences.
  • Content Analysis: Are we controlled by the food industry - look at advertisements that influence us to buy things - is what's in our baskets our choice? Look at advertising ploys / marketing techniques in and out of the supermarket to identity the hold that these supermarkets have on us and our diets. What items are pushed in offers? What are the main aisles that people visit? Is there enough labelling or enough options for others - there's aisles for foreign cuisine but is there always one for gluten? Take photos and compare - what is the language like? Is it positive or negative?
  • Has eating bread and other gluten products always been the norm? What did past diets look like - look into rationing/war efforts - did people get into eating more bread because it was the only thing not rationed? Has this transcended into generations?
